Few players have impressed me in their rookie seasons in the NBA. Of course, I must bring up Earvin Magic Johnson, Larry Bird( the enemY), and Michael Jordan. Shaqueel O’neal also was a huge game and team changer in the 40 years that I’ve been following the NBA. I had hope for Lonzo Ball in his rookie year but there was too much going on. Finally, Zion Williamson has arrived and lived up to the anticipated hype.
The New Orleans Pelicans are the team to watch and Zion is the reason why. With a team so strong offensively, they’ve become box office practically overnight. And when you add in Jrue Holiday and three former Los Angeles Lakers players, Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Josh hart, that makes for an even more compelling story. But Zion is the primary light on that team. He passionately makes plays on both sides of the court. In just 19 games, Williamson is averaging about 24 points and 7 rebounds per game in less than 30 minutes of play.
The pelicans are battling 4 teams for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference, including the front running Memphis Grizzlies. All they need is intense defensive play and they can reach it.
